Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father was absent from the family, and so she was raised by her mother, grandparents and godparents. Ford was suffering from anxiety disorder that was rooted in the word association when she was a teenager. Ford was first interested in acting at the age of teenager and enrolled in the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School, but after just a few days, decided that she would not be a good fit there. Ford decided to apply instead to the Central School of Speech and Drama and eventually secured an interview on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford graduated in 1993 but in the meantime, she had already made her debut on television in the 1991 season of Surgical Spirit; she adopted her professional title "Catherine Tate". Tate appeared on TV in the Nineties through shows like The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. In addition to her regular theatre work, Tate joined with the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000-2001. Tate started to get noticed because of her stand-up comedic performances in the year 1996.
